I noticed after I had the tires replaced on a recently-acquired '83 GL650, that there is very little clearance--probably no more than 2-2.5mm, between the right sidewall of the rear tire and portions of the drive shaft housing. That seems awfully tight to me and leads me to wonder what would happen if some unfortunate debris would get in that little space.

I don't see any alignment/adjustment options for the rear wheel, and my Clymer manual doesn't show a thing about it.

The bike tracks straight & true on the road, so I'm not worried about it from an alignment perspective.

Can any of the rest of you confirm if it's really that tight on your bikes too? Is this something I should be worried about or am I just paranoid?

Thanks

I've about worn out the crappy Challanger brand rear tire and figure I'll replace the Dunlop K451 on the front while I'm at it.
Any reccomndations for HIGH QUALITY tires? I wont do cheap cause I'm sick of lousy handling, ride and grip. I want a good highway tire that has good wet weather and road traits. I'm thinking Bridgestone, Conti or Metzler. any particular models or other quality brands I should consider?

Hi guys,

I just bought an 83 650 and the back tire needs replacing. I bought the tire but pretty much every shop I call has a huge wait list. If I took the rim off and brought in that and the tire, I can get it done on the same day. I've never had to deal with shaft drive before - how hard is it to take off the back wheel and re-install it? How hard is re-aligning it once it's back on? I've done it on chain drives before, just never shaft drive.

Thanks,

Can someone pleas measure with a caliper the widest part of their rear tire on a Silveriwng. My problem seems to be a generic rear tire that maybe toooooo wide. Although the size is correct, I still think it's too wide since I took off the rear wheel assymbly and it was really tough to squeeze it past the drive shaft hub/ flang assymble......Thanks

I own an '82 Silverwing converted to an interstate (23,000 miles) and love it. It rides and runs great. I have this little voice in the back of my head saying, "I should inspect/grease/replace the wheel bearings, this bike is over 23 years old". I don't enjoy the thought of catastrophic failure at 70 mph. I'm fairly mechanically inclined and have a shop manual. Is this something I should do right away and is it something I can do easily. I noticed that the rear bearing replacement calls for a special tool to remove the bearing retaining nut. Is this necessary? If so, where can I buy one? I have not looked at the method of replacement for the front bearings, any input would be appreciated. Thank-You.

Hey Guys and gals, need a little help about my tires on my 650I. I bought it while I was mobilized this past year and took it home where she sat for about 6 months. Since that time her tires went flat and continue to leak (both front and rear). I found the places which are on the edge of the rim in only one place. Do you think I can deflate the tires fully and try to shift them and then get them to re-seal or am I going to have to remove them and take them to a tire expert?? Thanks for the help......Tim

I need to replace the tires on my '83 GL650. Any suggestions on what brand/model I should get (e.g. no high perf or special duty) would be appreciated. Also, has anyone gone to a different size than factory spec, and with what results?

Finally, I need to replace my battery every two seasons. Does anyone have any thoughts on getting longer life out of it? (The bike sits all winter.)
