Well, the broken end of the muffler is still firmly lodged inside the collector box.

I will put a metal cutting blade in my reciprocating saw and cut into the slots in the collector to "ease" the muffler remnant.

But, before that I will try spreading the flange of the collector a bit more forcefully.

Have not done this yet, I'm procrastinating--afraid I might really mess it up. Heading out to visit one of my kids so won't tackle this job until I am back in a few weeks.

by then the weather will have improved so much that I will want to get back on the road.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have removed "most" of an ailing muffer but the section that fits into the collector box and is clamped in place has remained solidly fixed to the collector box.

I have tried liquid wrench, a hammer, and semi brute force...Hey, I'm an old guy.

How do I get this out so I can fit the "new" silencer from a CX500?

AND do I need another gasket to refit this muffler?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought a fixer upper 81 Silverwing a few months ago and can not get it to pass emissions. The tech at the emissions place said it is "running to lean" I have replaced the plugs, completely took apart the carbs and cleaned them and it still won't pass. It performs a little sluggish also which I think is related. Does anyone have any ideas?

On the H-shaped collector on my bike, there is a little hole on each side that a small amount of exhaust comes out of just before the mufflers. These are intentional holes, a quick glance at the bike and you'll see the ones I mean.

Are they supposed to leak exhaust, or are they supposed to be blocked by something? Can't find anything about them in the manual but it almost looks like they are meant for screws to go into, but they are rusted enough that I can't really tell. What's the deal?

Also, I find the exhaust sounds pretty quiet and mild-mannered. Can anyone recommend a nice loud pipe that will give the engine a bit of a rumble at an affordable cost?

Thanks,

Well, I'm finally on my way to getting the carb problem fixed (Hooray! for Yamaha carb cleaner!) when I get smoking. Not from the exhausts themselves, but from the "crossover" at the back of the engine, underneath. Lots of white or light gray smoke. Could it just be burn-off from some carb drain drippage? Seems like a lot. Also, there are some spider webs in that area, any chance they're contributing? Or have I got some sort of leak back there?

My 81 GL 500 Interstate mufflers have holes, both sides, just back of the collector box, probably from water condensation, very rusty and blowing out both sides. but rest of muffler looks fine. Bike has 65,000 km on it and from 50 feet away looks real good, 25 feet away pretty good, and right beside it looks like a 24 year old bike with the normal wear and tear from regular use.
Question one; does any one know if dealers still have this in as a stock item and how many rubles would one expect to have to remit for them?
Question two; is their an aftermarket item that would do the same job and look good and be reasonably priced?
Question three; being a real cheap ass, should I just get some kind of muffler bandage, wrap them and then not look at them again?
Question five; could I remove them and try to have my welding buddies braze them up for me.
Let me know if any one has had this same problem and what you did about it, thanks for any info.

Well, I've been having a lot of fun riding since getting my 650i back at the end of May.

I'm now looking at fixing up various little things here and there. My biggest concern at the moment is the left-side exhaust pipe. It looks like someone jammed something up it and just royally messed the end up. The other pipe is nice and clean on the end. I notice that when holding my hand behind both, the messed up pipe has noticably less force behind the exhaust coming out, perhaps a good third less at least. Is this something I ought to be concerned about? I was at a bike scrap yard a few weeks ago, and they had a bike with what looked like a good pipe on it. They wanted $70 for it. If a replacement is in order, is this a reasonable price?

Thanks!
