I decided to chrome plate my clutch cover (old one looked pretty bad). So, I pressed out the two sets of needle bearings, but damaged the set in the center of the plate. Now I find out that the needle bearings are not sold separately - they're sold only as a component of the clutch cover, which of course, has been discontinued.

The bearing that I need to replace is a INA-NTN HK-1210 (about 9mm dia). Anyone know of a source for those bearings, or a clutch cover assembly?

Thanks,

Rich in CT on the HTTA forum & I researched what would fit together when I was putting my frankenbike together & we have figured out the following:

NOTE: We didn't research the turbo models and couldn't find information for the GL400, so if anyone knows about them please let us know.

- There are several rear end configurations in this family of bikes.
- the original CX500 type
- the GL500 type
- the GL650 type
- the 2 piece propeller shaft/4 stud final drive design

- The part of the frame where the swingarm attaches & the width of the linkage where it attaches to the swingarm is the same for all of the Pro Link models. This means that the swingarm from any GL500, GL650, CX650C or CX650E will fit the frame of any other GL500, GL650, CX650C or CX650E.

- There are 2 different types of propeller shaft.
- The original 1 piece type has one part of the u-joint machined as part of the shaft. In spite of the fact that the online parts fiches call for different numbers, the ones for the GL500 & GL600 are identical. I'm not sure if the one for the CX500 is the same, but it looks different in the fiche drawing.
- The 2 piece type has a separate propeller shaft & u-joint. This type was used in the CX650E, CX650C, & GL700

- There are 2 different types of final shaft (the shaft that sticks out of the engine that the u-joint attaches to).
- The original type has a groove around the end to accomodate the bolt that attaches the u-joint to it and was used on all CX500, GL500, & GL650 models.
- The 2 piece propeller shaft type which has a tapered end was used on the CX650c, CX650E, & GL700.

- There are 4 different final drives.
- The original CX500 type has a stud for attaching the shock absorber & splines on the pinion gear shaft (input of the final drive) to engage with the splines inside the joint that is pinned to the propeller shaft. It is attached to the swingarm by 3 studs.
- The GL500 type is similar to the original CX500 type except that it doesn't have the shock stud.
- The GL650 type is similar to the GL500 type except that the raised centering ring on the swingarm that engages with the opening in the final drive housing has a larger diameter.
- The 4 stud type (CX650E, CX650C, GL700) has a large "pinion joint" mounted to the pinion gear shaft which engages with the splines on the propeller shaft.

I have an 83 gl650i which I've talked about on numerous occasions. I absolutely love this bike and my wife hasnt been able to get me off of it since i got the old girl back on the road.It sat for about 3 years before i got it, so the clutches were stuck and a bunch of other stuff i fixed. The first few days of riding the clutch was fine, now its slipping. I figured it might be out of adjustment, so i backed it all the way off. No problem getting it into gear with it backed of, but the thing is still slipping a little bit. What do you guys think it might be? And if it is the clutches, how hard are they to change???

The splines where the pinion joint & propeller shaft meet on my CX650E are badly worn. Having looked at the manual, it looks like my best bet would be to replace the whole rear end rather than try to replace the pinion joint (if it is even available).

It doesn't look like I will be able to find a CX650E or CX650T rear end to replace mine, but I might be able to get parts from a GL650.

Does anyone know if a GL650 swingarm will fit the CX650E frame? Are they different lengths?

I used my bike to run an errand this morning (about 5 miles) when I returned I parked in front of the garage. I took my gear off in the garage and when I returned to the bike 2 minutes later there was a large puddle of oil on and under the rear tire. Luckily it let loose just before I stopped, it could have been disasterous if it happened while I was riding.

The oil was coming from a "vent" at the bottom of the final drive and drained the whole unit.

I have removed the final drive. After consulting the Honda service manual I believe that the ring gear oil seal failed dramatically. Also after reading about the special tools required I have decided to drop the whole thing off at the shop on Moday.

Has anyone experienced this? Also the PO told me that he had put synthetic lube in the final drive, could this have caused a seal or o-ring to go?

By that I mean when i drop to first from nuetral or start to down-shift, it really akes a "CLUNK" sound.
Hi Folks,

I'm too embarrassed to tell how this happened but I dropped my GL500 the other day on it's left side (it wasn't moving - except downward) while it was in 2nd gear and after I picked it up I had a hard time getting it back into neutral.

I experimented with putting it in gear in my driveway after I got it home. It made a grinding sound once going into 2nd but hasn't done that since. I've moved it in in 1st and 2nd a few yards in the driveway under its own power.

My questions are these: should I be concerened about taking it out on the road for further testing and what bad things might have happened by falling on ones shift lever while in gear?

Thanks,

Ron

Hi,

Have you tackled swapping out the primary gear and clutch housing? I am in the middle of doing that for my brother ... literally in the middle of it.

I have found as pictured on page 12.0 of the Honda Factory Shop Manual that the primary gear on the 500 is a two piece unit. The thinner gear also has pins in it that go into the washer that the oil pump chain gear sits inside of on top of the primary gear. There is no rhyme or reason that I can see for this either. The primary gear on the 650 is a single unit. This is found on page 24.21 of the Honda Factory Shop Manual.

The clutch housing gear in the 650 is an offset two piece gear and on the 500 it is a one piece gear. Is there any rhyme or reason to this that you can think of?

Also, note that the 500 has a three piece, washer, sleeve, and washer on the clutch shaft inside the clutch housing and the 650 has a sleeve with a collar and one washer. Do you see any problems there? Does it make any difference which pieces I use?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Otherwise, I am just going to mic it up and measure lengths and thickness and if they are the same, just swap them out. From the boards I have read, it sounds like this is what all the others have done ... but they never mentioned the different parts with each assembly.

Shalom,
Thats what it looks like at first glance. There is now a hole melted into it from the gas. I have temporarily covered it up as best I can with duct tape. Anyone know what this part is even called so that I might hunt down a new one, not to mention how serious it might potentially be?
