Hello group,

I am considering the purchase of a 1982 GL500 Interstate but in checking the web I find many parts are no longer available in the U.S. Common parts such as cooling system hoses and vital parts such as ignition coils are listed as "Discontinued / Unavailable" on bikebandit.com and cyclepartsnation.com Are these parts available in other countries? Are there parts sources in Europe who still carry these items? As great as this motorcycle would be for me I am hesitant to purchase something I will not be able to find parts for. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

I have an '81 GL500 and am curious to know interchangeability of aftermarket parts intended for late 70's GL1000 to fit onto my 500. I have a lead on a Vetter WIndjammer II fairing that I would like to mount but don't want to buy it if won't fit... ie- the brackets, etc.

I'ld like to know if there is a list somewhere that reflects different parts of different models/years that may fit on a GL 500.

For ex. - Seat for '81-'83 GL650 fits GL500 (Not sure of the yr but this I know)

recently purchased on Amazon a Clymer manual for Honda cx & gl 500 / 650 twins.

The cover is RED with a rider leaning into a turn.
But, in the one in the ad has what looks like maybe an '83 GL650 on its' center stand with woods in the background.

Every M335 manual for the cx/gl series has the same ISBN number......

MY QUESTION: is the manual with the GL650 the last edition and printing and would it contain any new addendums for a 1980 CX-500 custom.
Thanks!

Hi, I'm just starting out with a 2003 Silverwing. My husband has a 2003 Goldwing (no CB). We are wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for bike to bike communication. We've been looking at FRS radios, but most don't offer him the option of hooking up through his current setup on his Goldwing (which gives him radio and mp3 access). We use the intercom system for bike to passenger communication now. If anyone has a good suggestion as to type of system or where to buy we'd appreciate the help. Thanks!

Greetings all! Great forum here...

I just purchased my 1st bike, a 1982 GL500I, and I'm anxious to get it on the road. One of the few things that needs replaced is the windshield, but the dealer price of $275 had me picking my jaw up off the floor!

I've heard that the windshield from the Gl1100 will fit, may even be an exact match, but I'm not familiar with any bike, so I'm curious if anyone knows whether this is true or not. Reason, JC Whitney has the shield for the 80-83 goldwing, but nothing listed for the silverwing. Picturewise, they look identical, but that doesn't mean they're interchangeable...

Anyone here know if I can use the 80-83 GL1100 shield for my 82 GL500I?

TIA for all replies!

Well, my Silverwing didn't come with any crash bars, which apparently will result in it landing on the head in a drop. Ouch, that's a lot of damage from a little drop.

I now have access to a MIG and TIG welder at my workplace and have some basic training on them... thinking of making up some bars myself as a simple first welding project.

Anyone who has the bars or has made bars, can you give me any pics/specs?

What are they made of, chromed steel? aluminum? Where and how do they mount to the frame?

Thanks anyone who can help.

Yes I know I could buy some but I like the idea of trying to do it myself...

Have been riding my gl650 more and more and have noticed that it causes quite a bit of numbness in my hands after about 30 minutes driving due to the vibration (the screw in mirror I have vibrates so bad at high speed that its almost useless). took it into a honda dealer to get a new front tire (have a new back tire) and a safety inspection, but if the new tire doesn't fix the vibration, is there something else that I should be looking for?

the main mechanic at the honda dealer has 20 years experience with this shop (Ted's Harley and Honda in Alton, IL), but has never worked on a Silverwing, but he thinks that the amount of vibration I am feeling is 'normal' for this model of bike. He took it on a 10 minute test drive and said it didn't seem abnormal to him.

Anyone else notice more vibration on this type of bike vs another model?
I used to drive an old roomates yamaha 650 and don't remember having numb hands after 30 minutes of riding.

cheers!

I bought this bike new in 85. Original owner. It has sat for years in my garage. Only 4K miles. I want to get it going again. I know I need the following:
- New tires (where is a good source and what kind should I buy?)
- Hard Starting (It ran last year but has been really hard to start for years, once it starts and gets warm in runs fine, is this a carb issue?)
- Small coolent leak from/by waterpump.
- Front fork seals leak
- New Battery
- Change all fluids
- Adjust Valves

My biggest concern is the hard starting, tires, changing the fork seals. I do have a service manual which should be helpful.

Any info appreciated. I want to tackle the hard starting first. Any idea on the cause of that?

Background: I just completed the motorcycle training and got my license. The only riding I've done was in class on a Honda Nighthawk 250. In order to findout if I really want to get into this world, I feel I need something bigger than a 250, but I'm NOT ready for a large bike. The GL650 would seem to fit the bill.

What I need: What type of cooling do these motorcycles use? Do they have chain drive or shaft drive. The one I looked at doesn't have a faring. Are they available aftermarket? How does a faring affect the performance of the motorcycle. I am NOT a mechanic!!! What are the obvious problems I should look for in an 83 Silverwing? It is being sold by a dealer, but I don't know anything about their reputation. What is the availablitiy of parts? There is a Honda dealer in the area, so I'm not woried about finding a mechanic, will they be able to get the necessary parts?

Thanks for any help any of you can give me.

Ok, I bought a new battery, spark plugs, etc. I can get it started on full choke but it seems to die about 10-30 seconds later as I am trying to ween it off the choke. Usually it will only start 1-2 times before I have to take out the plugs and spray a whole bunch more starter fluid into them just to get it started again. This bike hasn't been running in about 3 years, any suggestions? Much appreciated.

I am a new biker, grandmother, no mechanical experience, 6 mos. of riding total in my life, 2 safety courses, and addicted to riding. I own a Yamaha XT 225, 2005. Its fun but I get blown around alot, and it won't go more than 50 mph. It also won't start if the temp drops below 50 degrees. A fellow biker I met in a motorcycle safety class has a friend selling an 82 GL650, 12,000 miles. The price is very reasonable. My concern is, with no mechanical ability or desires to have any abilities, am I wise to buy a 23 year old bike? My honda lawnmower is 17 years old and has almost no problems. Can I expect the same from a Honda Motorcycle if it has been well maintained? I would take it in every 6 mos for service. Also, I can't find any details on the weight of this bike. I weight 125 and am concerned about handling it well. What problems am I likely to encounter? What will I love about the bike? What will I hate? I will be looking at the bike tomorrow and would like some advice from experienced Honda owners about what to look for, to see if this bike is a good fit for me. I plan to ride mostly country paved roads, solo and 2 up, and do almost no touring or overnighters. I say this but things may change once I have ridden a while.

PS. This is the only website I found that I could navigate and understand! Thanks for having such a great site. Any feedback anyone can give will be appreciated!

Hello all,
After buying an 8000 mile Silverwing GL 500 and driving it around for the first tankful, never getting it beyond 5000 rpms and feeling like a real Rockefeller as far as perceived gas mileage, I was astounded and wholly disheartened to find I`d only received 30 mpgs. Plugs looked great. Timing was fine, etc. I sold it immediately. I can`t help but wonder if perhaps I was too hasty in that decision. Beyond my abbreviated reading in your forum, I'm wondering if you members are as aghast as I am at this lack of fuel tank range AND if you could honestly tell me what I should realistically expect for mpg driving a GL 500 in a docile manner? I wish I could recall the tire size as that appears to be what a lot of you folks discuss on this subject. It was truly a nice little bike to commute around on. Input from anyone is greatly appreciated. Thanks Greg

Ok, I've been searching for about an hour online all in vain. Anybody have a clue what the horsepower on a 650i is? I don't seem to have a problem keeping up with my friends on their HD Sporty 883's. I got to thinking that the water cooled engine probably produces almost as much horsepower as a larger air-cooled one...

Anyone know?

Hello all- and thanks for a number of good tips already. I am in the process of changing the gasket on the the shroud surrounding the clutch assembly. I have already removed the fairing, exhaust and radiator to get the cover off - and thanks to some good tips- I hope to be able to pull the fan off this saturday so that I can start the reassembly process.

my Silverwing 82gl500 has 75000 miles on it- many of them hard miles. The previous owners did a good job of neglecting the bike and I have continued the tradition along with loads of abuse on dirt roads and lack of maintenance. I have done little to the bike other than new battery and tires when i first bought it three years ago.

I like this bike better than any of the others that I have had (five total). I find the bike to be versitile, reliable, comfortable, economical to operate with plenty of power.

Since I have four kids and no time- I would like to do as much REQUIRED maintenance as possible while I am already working on it. My goal is to simply keep it running as long as possible with a minimum amount of time working on it.

What is the required, absolute must do list of maintenance on a bike this old? what would be your list od 2nd priority items that I need to look at doing?

Thanks in advance for you input- I am hoping to put a few thousand miles more miles on it this year!!

Hi everyone! I'm the new owner of a GL500! I live in South Korea and am looking for information. I am wondering if the bike is a DOHC or not. I know it sounds a little foolish to ask, but I'm unsure.
Also, are there any quirks about the bike that people seem to notice as they've owned this model for a while? I need to adjust something in the cylinder heads because I keep hearing a noisy, clickity-clack...I'm assuming it has something to do with valve clearences or tappets, but as I'm definitly an engine noob and have very little experience working on engines myself, I am unsure. Needless to say that I'm a bit reluctant to take it in to the local korean mechanic in my neighborhood without a good idea of what's going on.
The bike seems to have been neglected and the tacho/speedo does not work. I also think it needs exhaust gaskets. I've seen these on Ebay cheap, but if anyone wants to drop me a line and let me know how I can tell for sure, I'd appreciate it.
I bought the bike to do a little touring on with my girlfriend and hope anyone can give me advice about the bike.

Thanks for listening, Rodney
