I have an '82 GL500, new to me (first bike) with 32,000 miles. Still learning the ropes, but having a great time. The rear shock/suspension does not hold air pressure, so the ride is a bit harsh. I am told the part is discontinued, and I have not been able to locate a rebuild kit. Any ideas? Is there an airshock that would work in the original's place?

After putting my bike back together I find that I have a minor wobble on the front end between about 25 and 40 MPH. It only manifests itself if I take one or both hands off the grips. Above 40 it goes away completely and the S'wing rides like a charm. I put the bike on the center stand and checked for give and play in the neck bearings and wheel bearings. The bearings show no play whatsoever. I do notice some fork flex when I have my wife hold the handlebars and flext the wheel back and forth. It seems to have more flex that my Virago or the 83 Nighthawk I used to ride.
I think a fork brace might work but I haven't been able to locate one made for the Siverwing. I know the top of the fork legs are 55mm, the fork tubes are 33mm and the distance between the forks is 185mm center to center. Can anyone direct me to where I can purchase a fork brace. I found one that is dimensionally correct except the holes are 59mm. Does anyone know if a brace can be shimmed to fit?
Any help would be appreciated.

This past weekend, I noticed that it feels odd when I go to make a turn and when I take off. I thought that it was missing air from the forks so I put air in and noticed that the air was coming out of the valve. I tightened the valve and it is holding the air but it still feels odd. the front end feels a little wobbly. any suggestions on what it may be?

Just changing the seals isn't going to cut it, you've got to clean all the slime out of the damping orefices and internals. This is going to be a fork-off-the-bike job with lots of time spent cleaning small oil passages and ungooing shimstacks... Best of luck to you.

I'm not even sure what solvent will take care of the fixaflat, you may have to try several. I suggest getting a couple acid brushes, some acetone, Isopropyl Alcohol, carb cleaner, brake cleaner... See what works best. You're going to have to throughly clean the entire fork assembly, crossover hose too if you've got one.

Hi Folks,

I just bought an 83 650 and apparently 2 owners ago, someone used emergency tire inflate / sealer in the front forks to seal and pressurize the forks.

Aside from my ongoing amazement at misdirected inspiration, I'd like to know if anyone else had this experience and suggested next steps.

I half figure that the valve is sealed shut and am going to try to pressurize the forks once I have new valves in hand (in case they stick open or don't open at all).

They are firm enough for now but the thought of the front forks failing or loosing shock absorption on a long ride is really troublesome.

I plan on taking the forks off this winter and doing a disassembly / rebuild on them. Aside fron having to clear out any and all gunk, is this a huge task or just a matter of putting in new seals etc?

Thanks,

Hello,

I am posting for a friend who owns a very nice low mileage 650 silverwing. The trouble is, he bought it before really figuring out that he is too short to comfortably reach the ground with anything more than tip-toes. He would like to keep the bike, but believes he'd need to lower the total seat height about 1.5".

Does anyone have any suggestions on where and how to achieve this much height reduction, safely? By the way, he is an excellent machinist, and could easily fabricate a new bracket for the rear monoshock. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I am currently restoring a GL500dc 1982. I have completed all the welding repairs to my frame and replaced all the bushes & bolts for the pro link I have also changed the swinging arm bearings. I am near to starting the rebuild and got the monoshock out of its storage box, the damper shaft appears in good order and the seal doesn't show any signs of leakage,

I feel after 23 years it would be worth changing the oil, I have read a couple of techniques both involve creating a vacumn in the cylinder, which subsequently draws the fresh fluid into the empty cylinder. then you bleed off 200 mls to give the correct airspace.

my question is finally can anyone give me a few tips on creating the vacumn without the hydraulic press describe in the manuals?

Bent fork/steering (1 reply)

I had a very foolish moment recently and ended up having a cup of tea with the pavement. As a result, my steering seems to be a bit off. The handle bars are tilted slightly to my left. It's not so much that it's awkward, but it is noticable. They were even worse immediately after the incident, but I fiddled with things a bit, and it's pretty minimal now.

The source of the bend seems not to be in the fork itself, so much as the steering column they're mounted to, though it may more likely be a mixture of the two, with the steering column being the more obvious.

Any advice on correcting this, or am I pretty much stuck with what I've got until I can get a new one? Or is the steering column not truely symmetrical to begin with? My judgement here stems from some slight apparently asymmetrical angles from one side to the other. And I've never examined this closely before.

Any not-so-obvious safety hazards I might want to consider until I can get it fixed? She does seem to ride and turn well, no wobbling or awkwardness. Seems safe. But I've been wrong before.

Thanks!

Can anyone help me out a bit with my front wheel? It seems to be irremovable so far as I can tell. Both of my repair manuals are either giving incomplete or inaccurate information.

From my impression of the manuals, I should be able to remove the axle after removing the axle holder and brake calipers.

And according to one of the manuals, there's supposed to be one on either side of my forks.

My forks only have one axle holder, and it's on the bike's left side. The other side has some sort of screw-in thing for the axle on that end.

I have been fiddling with this for hours now, to no useful result. It's pretty firmly implanted in there regardless of what I do. Sure, I can unscrew the other end by turning the axel nut. But even once fully unscrewed, there's no good result. won't budge at all.

Needless to say, this has me more than just a little annoyed here.

I bought an 83 GL650 dirt cheap knowing it needed some work, But what I didnt see until I got it home is the front forks are bent. Looks like someone along the way hit something and bent them back slightly, then in an attempt to make it rideable spun them around so the bend is heading forward.

I need to replace the upper fork tubes, but from what I'm seeing they are somewhat unique to the GL650. Can anyone confirm they are 37mm? Will forks from a similar honda model with the same diameter work?

I found a web site the sells fork seals, and lists the seal size for the GL as 37mm ID by 50mm OD, and it also lists other honda makes that the same deal fits is why I am thinking I could use tubes from a different model.

HELP!

thanks !!!

I own an 81 Silverwing GL500, and the only complaint I have about it is that it's too top heavy. It's hard to keep balanced at a stop or low speeds. I'm 6'0" tall, and 175 lbs. Is there anyway to lower it a little via the tires, forks or rear shock??

Also I have noticed when coming to a stop the bike jerks to the right. Any idea as to why this would happen? Uneven fork pressure? Or maybe due to the fact that is is a single brake caliper? Any fixes to the problem are welcome. I almost dump the bike everytime I have to come to a sudden stop.

I am sure this has come up hundreds of times, but I have not been able to find the info I need. My front forks are rusty and pitted. I have replaced the seals, but the pitted forks blew the seal in a month of daily riding. I have seen lots of fork tubes on ebay, but they all seem to have rust. I checked with my local honda shop, and they want almost 200 a tube IF they can still get them. My question is, can the fork tubes be rechromed? Or is it even chrome? I have a decent bike, but the rust is driving me nuts. I have a few more months on this tour of Iraq, so I have some time to try and figure this out. The bike is an 81 GL500i.

I installed the fork seals last night (followed all the procedures outlined in my Clymer book, this forum & Rob Davis's Web resource page) and thought I was successful. One seal was really bad and leaking like a screen door & not much fluid was in the fork.
I have seen an immediate improvement in ride & handling, no surprise there. I have a question regarding the proper amount of ATF to put in. I have seen several different amounts listed for my 83 GL650 Interstate. I put in 7.1 oz according to the Clymer manual (rear section of the book).
And- I am now seeing a small amount of fluid on the dust caps after only riding to work this morning. Should I be concerned? It's equal to each fork (before it was just the one) and my thought is to wipe and watch. I did apply a liberal amount of clean fluid during reassembly and am hoping this is just residue.
One the other hand, could I be looking at re-doing the job??
