My sons bike has cracked and leaking boots from the carb to the intake port. We tried filling the cracks with RTV yesterday but did not seem to work. The boots are 25 years old so have hardened and may not seal around the carb well and that may be the real cause of the air leak instead of the cracks. At approx. $50 per side, replacing them is out of his budget. Any suggestions?

Edit: This was supposed to be a reply in the "carb sync" thread! I don't know how it ended up out here.

Having a problem with carb sync changing through the revs here as well! Except mine is causing engine issues.

Idle - 5000rpm, the carbs are almost perfectly synched (using a differential oil-in-tube gauge). The engine sounds great.

Above 5000rpm, the carbs are notably out of sync and the engine's sound goes from a smooth rumble to a sound more reminiscent of a chainsaw engine. Bad handlebar buzz and everything loose on the bike rattles like it's trying to fall off.

If I drop my idle below 1000, the sync appears to drift as well, and the bike stalls around 900 on the bike tach (I don't have an external tach). The bike is supposed to idle all the way down to 600 with synched carbs, so this also looks odd.

This happened after doing valve clearances/camchain tension/plugs, and then resyncronising the carbs. Should I balance at 5000rpm then, or at idle? And what could be causing it to change?

Even though I've been doing my own vehicle maintenance and repairs on my cars and trucks over the years, I'm pretty new to motorcycle maintenance. I've been working on a rough idle and "stumble" on takeoff problem on my GL650 for a week or so and have a question about carb syncing. I made one of those inexpensive vacuum balance tools from clear vinyl tubing and oil and my carb balance is way off at idle by about 15 inches but it balances out at about 2000 rpm and then goes the other way as the rpm goes higher until, at about 4500 rpm, the balance if off by about 8 inches in the other direction. (I'm using 1/4" OD tubing and 2-stroke motorcycly oil.)

Is it normal for the carb balance to vary like that?

This started out a week ago when I took my fuel petcock apart to fix a minor leak. When I put it back together, the bike was acting like it was fuel starved during heavy acceleration although it was fine while cruising at a steady speed. That problem turned out to be a very dirty air filter. I rode it home from work on Friday with no air filter and the problem was gone. A new filter dropped the power a bit but it's still running good and doesn't act fuel starved anymore. Also on the ride home on Friday, the bike seemed like it wanted to stall at a red light and it "stumbled" on takeoff. I thought it was just running extra lean with no air filter but It's still doing that when it's fully warmed up. The local temperature hit 91 on Friday. I don't know if that has anything to do with it though.

I replaced the spark plugs then checked the carb balance and that's when I discovered the out of balance condition that varies with rpm. I haven't ridden it since I changed the plugs.

Oh yeah, I did drain the tube under the air box. I got quite a bit of muck out of it. The stumble problem is still there.

Thanks for reading this far and I hope someone can offer some advice on the carb sync issue. I didn't want to sync them at idle if there was something else causing the unbalanced condition that varies with rpm.

Thanks,

I have an 82 Silverwing with about 12,500 miles on it. I don't get to ride much at all, maybe 1,000 miles each year, mostly to my office and home. A few months ago, it started idling funny on startup, revving up and down until it warmed up, then it's fine. One four different occasions, the bike has compeltely stalled on me while going down the road. I pull off the road, let it sit for a couple of minutes, start it up and it runs fine until the next time it stalls. It backfires just before stalling. I've had the carbs cleaned and adjusted, but it is still doing it. Any ideas?

For those of you who have any doubts about the value of balancing your carbs, consider the following:

Recently, I had some starter problems with my GL650. In the steps of troubleshooting, I quickly eliminated compression and spark as being part of the problem and went to look at fuel system problems. I have a spare set of carbs and spare petcock. Being easy changes, I changed them out.

When I ultimately identified the starter as the problem and repaired it(nothing more than cleaning and lubricting the darned' thing), I decided to leave the replacement carbs on my bike. In riding, it was easy to see that something was different. Idle RPM, typically around 900 on my tuned carbs hovered around 1100. Vibration which was non-existent on my older carbs was aparent from 2500 RPM on up. Handle bar buzz set in at 4000 RPM. My mirrors actually stareted to work loose. The most telling loss in performance in this experiment was in fuel consumption. Typically, I get between 45 and 52 MPG. With the unbalanced carbs, mileage dropped to 25MPG.

Moral of the story: Take time to synchronize your carbs. It makes a world of difference in performance.

Ok, I just replaced the engine intake boots on the front of my carbs. the old ones had some cracks, these other one's didn't. Should have been a nice easy change, right? She was running perfectly before this change.

Now she won't idle, she'll run very roughly for a moment and eventually kick out. and half the time when I rev up, she just kicks out completely.

What have I probably messed up here? Is it probably as simple as needing new seals? (I reused the old ones, they seemed perfectly fine) Or have I more likely jacked up something or another in the process that might not be immediately obvious?

I changed one of the boots back to the original, no change. In the morning when it's light out again, I'll change the other one back as well and see if that does anything, but I am doubting it so far.

Decided to keep the old girl after all, and getting her in fighting trim. Did NOT drain the carbs over the winter, but I started the bike about once every 6 weeks.

Now she starts fine, but upon warm up and zero choke, idle speed drops too low (about 800 indicated) and there's a definate hesitation when cracking the throttle. I checked the air filter, and it's awful...no front foam seal, and really dirty. I've ordered a replacement from OBB. Could it be air starvation, or possibly gummy/varnished jets? Even old gas maybe? Water in the gas?

Thanks!

1983 GL650i
49k miles

Engine runs normally for about 20 miles on open road (40-60mph), then suddenly accelerates and runs exceptionally well! Power and acceleration are commendable, but closed throttle now results in engine coughing. This is not what I call a backfire (this comes out the exhaust) or post detonation as it is rather mild and subdued. It first occured in right exhaust and later seemed to also occur in left. There is an increase in exhaust pressure at tailpipe during cough. Opening throttle even a little eliminates problem. Haynes Manual suggests that an airleak in the exhaust could result in "popping and crackling" in the exhaust on "rolloff". This sounds close but on disassembly of exhaust system could find no obvious source of airleak at either head or either tailpipe junction. Asbestos seals still look good.

Has anyone had a similar instance beside Mike in Florida (spitting & sputtering) in November? Mike's problems didn't sound quite like mine.

I was picking the m/c up from purchase and returned it 100 miles home and was told that it runs rough or backfires by previous owner. This seems a little different to me since it came on suddenly for me, yet is a repeat problem from three owners ago. The symptoms indicate to me that with great open throttle response and rough/noisy closed throttle operation, that the timing is somehow getting too far advanced for slow ignition during operation. Is that possible on this engine?

I guess I didn't do a very good job potting my GL650I away last fall, the bike starts and idles fine and seems responsive while sitting still (revs upto 4000 with just a twist of the wrist). When I start to let the clutch out I have to give it excessive throttle to get going and it bogs down between each upshift, the performance at any RPM is awful but most notable between gear changes. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I made a couple of mistakes when I was cleaning the carbs of my GL-650:(.

One of them was that I did not pay attention to the difference between the main and secondary jets.

One of them as a slightly larger diameter hole, but they both have the same thread size and will fit in either place.

My question is which has the large hole and which has the small?

I have a 50/50 change of getting it right but I'm not fealing lucky.

My guess would be the large diameter one is the main.

Thanks for you help,

Alright, There I was, crusing home last night at 70mph on my gl650. suddenly my speed starts dropping. I glance at the odometer. 170. Ok, sure maybe I got a little less milage than normal this time around. I switch to reserve and wait for her to resume her usual speed. Nothing. Won't go above 55, 60 if I push it.

I make it home, go to sleep, and do some tests this morning. I put in some new plugs I had bought last week as well. There's also an oil loss problem and I added more oil to get the level back up a few days ago. I then go out and ride, and make some notes.

In 4th gear, I move along perfectly normal, up until about4400-4500 rpms, then she suddenly seems to lose power. she's saying "I just can't push any harder" Feels like my mother's escort when I try to speed up to pass on the freeways. but then I drop back to 42-4300rpms, and she just peps along as if nothing had happened.

I downshift to third. I get the same thing at 5000 rpms. I move back to the normal streets and get the same thing at around 6500 in 2nd.

I then head home. I do some more checking over. Oil level is fine. I notice a lot of heat from the whole of the engine block, which I don't recall from the past, although I've seldom actually bend down by the engine like this right after riding, so it may be nothing. I then check the coolant. The reserve is entirely empty. (although I seem to recall something in the past about coolant not being in the reserve right after riding, but it suddenly appearing again when I returned a few hours later.. this may occur again here.) I know it was fine just a couple of weeks ago. and I did not have any temperature problems while riding, the gauge was the same as usual.

based upon the above notes, any ideas of what may be the cause of this? I am hoping it may be as simple as a loose throttle cable, which I intend to check as soon as I have a little more time free, but I'd like as many other opinions as possible first.

Thanks!

Hey all, proud owner of a 82 GL500 here. Recently my bike is really starting to miss, backfire and sputter. I eliminated it being an air filter problem as it still does it with the filter removed. I also have tried adjusting the idle screw with no success. It does it mostly at steady speeds above 40mph, during heavy acceleration and on throttle off at highway speeds. Looking to get a carb synch soon but wanted some more input. Thanks.
