If anyone wants a black Windjammer fairing, I'll be letting mine go after December, cheap!! Keep it in mind? My Silverwing is the GL500 not the Interstate so I'm not liking that Windjammer fairing on it. Husband says it's in good shape, but we need to get it from New York to Texas when he gets done with his job. Wonder how much that would cost to ship somewhere? LOL!

Great forum here, going to spend the next few days reading up.

Anyone have a red Silverwing? (I've just never seen one but mine, kinda strange, are they rare? It's red with black,, kinda two toned, I'll post pics later). Cool, maybe I have a rare one? LOL!

Okay, my '81 non-interstate GL500 has been altered, and a little more then I originally thought. I've bought some new seat covers and was looking at how the rear seat gets removed (plan was to get the seats off and recover them over the next few weeks). My bike doesn't have quite a few things in the back, most noticeably the grab bars. Okay, no big deal... Except that my bike also doesn't have the locks (possible uh-oh).

What I have is a set of posts with a hex head and a threaded opening and some caps fitted over the opening. Behind those are some aftermarket signal lights affixed to the body off to the sides and back from the tail light. It gives the bike a nice clean look, but the missing bars do look a little strange when viewing the bike from the side. One can see the post stubs and rear lights on this larger image, though it's not the best view of that specific area: [img.photobucket.com]

What I'm wondering is, when the locks are unlocked and one pushes them forward, do they turn, or do they physically slide back? I currently suspect that the locks had a hex seat and mounted to these posts so that when they where moved, they would twisted the posts to actuate the seat locking mechanism (pure guess right now as my bike is across the city in storage). Is this how they operated the seat/trunk lock?

Hello!
I just bought an '82 Silver Wing that has a tape deck above the instruments. It was a cheapo so I replaced it with an Alpine 7165 and added a Pioneer GM-A5 amp, in keeping with the vintage of the bike. The console containing deck and speakers has a built in antenna that looks like the rear defroster foils from a car as well as a flip open rain cover for the deck. It all works nicely, but I was wondering if this was cosidered aftermarket junk. I know it looks nothing like a Honda/Clarion setup. Any comments?

I was blessed enough to find some 83 crash bars on e-bay. I planned to put them on my 82 interstate. When they were received, they had done what they were designed for and were somewhat beat up. I have pounded the engine bar back into close enough shape that I would like to install it on my bike with the unltimate goal of highway pegs. Since I have no instructions, I am guessing that they install on the front engine mounts and wrap around the bottom. From looking at pictures of other bikes, this is my best guess. Any one with experience in this area? Do they secure on the bottom somewhere? Most importantly, do I have to take off the muffler to attached them and must it be the entire system? I would much perferr to know a little bit more before I go tearing stuff apart.
Thanks,

Hello!

I have a question regarding the fairing mount for the GL650i. In acquiring the mounting hardware for the fairing, and comparing with the Honda Shop Manual for the SilverWing, it looks like there are two curved brackets that come off the front of the fairing mounting bracket which I did not receive. I have also found on eBay a GL500 fairing mounting bracket that shows in the picture those two curved brackets. Downloaded the picture for those interested in seeing what I'm referring to.

Do these curved brackets only apply to the GL500, and not the GL650?

Thanks,

Hello fellow S'wing owners!

I've just found the bike of my dreams... an '83 GL 650. It is the apple of my eye. I have the opportunity to purchase from another S'wing owner ('83 GL 650i) the fairing and luggage. My question is... will my bike accommodate the fairing and luggage? And... if so, which parts do I need from the 650i to do the conversion?

Or, am I nuts to even consider it and it will screw up my bike beyond repair?

A related question... other than the fairing and luggage, what is different about the Interstate model?

Thanks much!
Kindest Regards,

My suggestion, if you can't find the pieces that are meant for your bike, are to find them at a marine (boat) dealer. Several audio companies are making weather resistanct stereo pieces and they are usually available at those places because of the unique problems with installing electronics in a boat. There are water-proof covers (some even lock for security) available for most common DIN sizes.
I personally am going to mount a small amp and small speakers in the fairing and a GL1100 trunk on back with speakers and use an MP3 player. Good luck with the bike.
