Fellow bikers,
In the course of owning my 82 GL500 for 3+ years I've managed to wear through the "wire hoop" that was welded to the kickstand by some aggressive corning. Now it has totally removed itself from said kickstand making it a PITA to get it down when parking. Has anyone else ran into this and how did you fix it short of going the Ebay route for a new one. Thanks, Jeff

Does anyone have any experience using a motorcycle jack under the SilverWing? I am looking at the bike and wondering what the best way to lift is. I'm considering buying a motorcycle jack for service work and storage movement. It appears one of the jack rails would be positioned under the crank case and head pipes. Is this a safe lifting point? It doesn't seem like it, but I'm sure someone out there knows the best way to lift their Wing. If you have any recommendations or secrets, let me know.

Thanks.

Some advice,

I have a GL500 1981 US model (not interstate) with a prolink rear suspension. On the Π shape part of the swingarm, I have found that it had rusted and had a hole (maybe about 1cm) in the middle of the joining part which is between the long legs, or in other words its the closest point to the engine but faces and is adjoining the center of the tyre's stripes.
I went to a mechanic and he soldered a peace of metal which was quite thin probably just to cover the hole.
Is it critical with regards to safety, or is most of metal on the long legs?

many thanks

I need some help with my 650i. I got it from a guy up in New Jersey and I had to do some extensive fairing work where the previous owner dropped it and smashed the plastic pretty bad. Well I got that all done and I had to re-weld the frame for the fairing. I thought I had it pretty close to perfect but when I put her on the road last month, something just isn't right. At 60+ miles and hour it feels like the darn thing is going to take off and fly! I took off the saddle bags thinking my 187 lbs + the saddle bags was to rear end heavy, that wasn't it though. I got to thinking that maybe the frame for the fairing wasn't quite as straight as it should be and I was getting too much wind resistance or too much upward wind push creating a wing effect. So I found a used frame for the fairing and bought it at a tune of 80 US dollars. Well when I got it, I measured it compared to my old fairing frame, there was only 1 centimeter difference in the front. So my old fairing frame had the Fairing sitting about a centimeter higher. I just don't think that 1 cm would make that much difference. Could it be the forks were removed at some time and when they re-installed them they put them to low in the triple tree? I am just at a total loss. I took her for a 360 mile ride this past weekend(before I got the new fairing frame) and the bike is a great runner and has lots of power but this sensation of taking flight really isn't very fun.....Any ideas??
Thanks for the help

Hello to all out there! A quick question for those of you who have owned a GL500 for longer than a few days! Does anyone know about fabricating highway pegs for the bike. I am planning long trips in the future and would like to have some seating options for the long haul. Near as I can tell, I can't find anything to attach pegs to unless I invest in something like crash bars. If anyone has any novel ideas, keeping in mind that I am only 5 foot six, I would love to hear them. Many thanks in advance.
I've taken the bike out on several longer trips testing it, and love it so far.
Am having trouble getting used to how tall the bike stands upright. Doesn't lean hardly at all on the side stand.
Is there an aftermarket side stand that would allow it to lean more like other bikes. I don't want it to roll on a hill b/c it's to upright.
Would a moto guzzi side stand work, they have similiar engine shapes.
appreciate the help for this new owner and new member.

Okay I need a lot of help.
I just about had my project ready to go(650I). when I got a new battery and checked out the tires for a test spin, the rear tire was scrubbing on the side of the rear swing arm. Dang I thought the hard part was behind me.. I checked the tire pressure- Okay, I checked the rim- Okay, But the swing arm bushings are bone dry-(I took the plastic caps off both sides)- my guess the popping that I had heard when I parked her last year has come to haunt me--- I am guessing rebuild?? Any details would be greatly appreciated! I am ALSO guessing I will have to go buy the tool for the special nut on the swing arm bolt?? thanks......Tim

PS.... I sure would like to ride sometime this summer but I got a late start on the winter project(fairing cracks) because I was mobilized with the Army Reserves and just got home in Feb.

The previous owner of my bike laid it down in a crash avoidance with a car. The left side crash bar is still usable, but eventually I will replace the set. Until then, I've considered removing it and straightening the attachment bracket about 1/2". When I compare the left and right crash bars I can get a finger between the cylinder head and the bar on the right side, but there's only a fraction of an inch on the left. Has anyone tried to "cold set" this chromium steel? I think I can get it in a vise and leverage it or hammer out the 1/2" but I'm wondering about cracking at the bend. This material appears to be really strong, especially since it withstood the weight of the machine and rider in that crash. Opinions?
