83 GL650I - keeps losing power & back firing (no replies)

I have an 83 GL650I it's been running great until a couple of months ago. It all of a sudden would start running rough the longer I would run the worse it would get. Start back firing & loose power. The other day on a run It started acting up so I headed home in a distance of about 4 miles I went from 55 MPH to a max speed of 40 MPH with constant backfiring. I stopped and pulled out the paper air filter that was soaked, I assume from the backfiring and it ran great for about 3 miles then within the next 4 miles it was right back to where it was. I thought It may be heat related even though It wasn't anywhere near overheating, pulled over and waited a while before taking off again. About 3 miles later it all repeated again.

The plugs are nice and clean, the carburetor slides have been cleaned, both plugs & caps have been replaced.

Hopefully someone has a suggestion or knows the problem, I'm stumped :X

Thanks

Greetings. I've read that some versions of the engine used in Silverwings has known issue with failure of the cam chain tensioner. I'm trying to find out if my bike is one with a problem prone tensioner. Short of disassemble for inspection, how can I tell?
Need advice on valve clearance.
Got a Gl650 with 18000 on it.

I’m getting a noise around 3500-4000 RPM that sounds like it might be the valves. Considering they have never been adjusted I thought it be a good place to start.

All four valves on the right cylinder have about 0.001” clearance. The left exhaust has about the same 0.001” but both of the left intakes are up around 0.005”. This seems odd to me.

I’m hoping there’s a seasoned mechanic out there that has an opinion. I’m wondering if difference in clearance it’s telling me something, like there is excess wear and something else needs to be looked at.

I will adjust to the proper clearance but before I do I wanted to know if I should be looking at something else.

Thanks, Rich

Hello Everyone, I just signed up tonight. I am a biker from way back. All Japanese. Honda 175, CB360 X2, CB750F supersport, GS650, Venture 1200, and now I have a 1981 GL500I. I recently removed the floor boards. I still have them and will offer them up for sale. I need a few items. I need a left side cover (prefer black). I also am having difficulty finding highway bar/pegs. I am beginning to believe I need to fabricate these. It isn't my line of work, but I need something as I am a relatively tall guy. Any tips as to where I can buy one? Also, I am going to change the choke cable out. Any tips? Also, I want to send the bike out this winter and have a new paint job put on it. Any leads as to the graphics? I just purchased a bunch of parts off e-bay. I will list them soon. I hear there is a Honda salvage yard called Oz south of KC? I am tempted to take a ride down there. Has anyone ever been there? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Mark

Just bought a 1983 GL650 Silver Wing Interstate. Been told it has a blown head gasket.

Is this a common thing on this engine?
Is it a big job to replace
Are the valves operated by pushrods or a cam chain?
Is there anything special I need to look out for?

Is there a free download of a manual for this bike available?
Cheers & Happy New Year.

I just bought a CX500 with a 1983 650GL motor. It rides great, starts right up, but after it warms up, I hear a tapping that is hard to diagnose. It seems to come from the rear of the engine, more so on the right than the left. It doesn't really have a scraping sound to it, just a tapping. The person I bought it from got the motor from a salvage, it has 15,000 miles on it. It has the self tensioning cam chain. Does any one have any ideas. I want to go on a group ride next weekend that would be about 250 miles round trip?

Hi Don, I also immediately thought about the oil (having a car care mentality). The oil volume was fine and without much grit in it (off the dipstick). I had not changed it for 2.5 years+ and about a couple of thousand miles. The bike has almost 60k miles on it... (most not mine). I got it in what appeared to be fine working order 2.5 years ago for 400$. I priced a new engine at 600$ from a salvage yard a few hours drive from my home. I am starting to think that perhaps I need to ask if anyone wants this bike for spare parts.

The preliminary diagnosis you gave sounded ominous to say the least. I suspect that I will be buying a new (used) bike sometime soon... and then taking this one apart to teach myself about bike mechanics.

Thank you for your response and ideas. If I learn more, I'll let you know.

hi all,

first time on the site... in need of some advice. My engine seems to have had a major breakdown. 1982 GL500.

Situation leading up to problem: nothing bizarre, had bike properly stored for three months in garage; had to switch out the old battery upon return.

Moments before disaster: Road bike mellow for 30 minutes and upon return to home all of a sudden heard rather loud whine from engine that eventually turned into more of a scream. Increased with acceleration, occurred when coasting. With engine off but coasting, no noise.

Last gasps: In garage, turned over engine but immediately heard ka-CHNUK...ka-CHUNK (heavy and repeated every partial second). Sounded like entire engine was going to blow. A few days later, started it up again for a mechanic friend and it was now a very heavy rattle.... like a chain was wipping around in there.

Guesses: Camchain tensioner blew and camchain is whirling around.

Diagnosis: I have not yet entered the front of the engine to see if the cam moves (if it does, its the tensioner so i have been told).

Question #1: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG?

Question #2: IF I GET IN THERE (with essentially no bike mechanical experience... requires removal of nearly every major system to get to back of engine)... COULD I EVEN FIND THE PARTS I WOULD NEED TO MAKE THE REPAIR??

My local Honda dealer said to junk it. No one I can find around here to work on such an old bike.

Question #3: ANYONE KNOW SOMEONE IN THE EASTERN FLANK OF LOS ANGELES REGION THAT CAN AND WANTS TO WORK ON SUCH A BIKE?

I am in a bit of denial still... going through the seven stages of mourning... any ideas welcome. If none, I am looking for a bike... so, any bikes out there and available... I am open to ideas.

thanks all,

I noticed that the cam chain slipper (the guide that the automatic tensioner presses against) is no longer available for the GL650 bikes. Its part # is 14511-ME2-000. But the CX650 custom and CX650 Turbo, which have the same engines, still have that part available (14511-MC7-000). Incidentally, that part also fits the CX500 Turbo.

Does anyone know if the CX650 custom/turbo slipper will also fit GL650's. Far as I can tell, the engines are identical inside. They use the same automatic tensioner, cam chain and guide (the one on the other side of the cam chain).

Thanks...Peter

Folks

I have a rebuilt 83 GL650. The bike was recently restored (not by me) and has been riding well for a few months now. However I have noticed that every time the bike is used I find I have a small 'teaspoon' level drip of oil coming out of a drain plug from the air cleaner case when parked on the center stand. Now I do understand that the bike had been standing very several years prior to restore, if this helps any.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I am wondering if there is a popular problem for the GL500 on changing gears as I think I was told from another.

For me very often I get out of gear between 1st and 2nd usually when under load, and other times I can not lower gears (it helps if I throttle a bit).

Would a replacement of the gear change mechanism help?

many thanks

Hello,

I purchased an '83 GL650 and am having problems figuring out what to do with a port on each carb - inside near the throttle linkage/cable. On each carb there is a small (1/16 inch diameter) brass port that leaks fuel when the carb is tipped - otherwise appears to have little I/O when the engine is running.

The ports protrude from the carbs by about 1/4" and it appears as if they should be connected together with a piece of rubber tubing. In the diagram of the carbs it appears as if it is a fuel tube port to the other carb. If I leave them unplugged it causes much missing, if I plug them closed on each side the missing is reduced, but still get some popping and bubbling on deceleration. It is in a precarious place for a tube to be running between them with the throttle linkage directly in line - the tube would have to make some 90 degree bends to get across.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!
Its amazing what you can do with Vice Grips, PB Blaster and a cold beer. Got the in inboard broken stud out without removing the exhaust and snagged a 6 x 50mm stud from a CL175 head I had laying around as a replacement. Tested and its good!

I just purchased a 1981 GL500 Silverwing with 23500 miles on it; runs and drives great. I have been away from motorcycles for about twenty years so my description on this will probably be way off - anyway, I have an oil leak that looks like it it coming from a gasket between a cover and it runs down - it is close to where the exhaust comes out of the engine. Should I be concerned about this or how could I fix it? I can take a picture and post it if that would help.

Also, my speedometer case was bent before I bought it; I found a used one - are these hard to swap out? Can I set the mileage on these?

Thank you.

Hello,

On a 1983 GL650 there is a hole on the side of each cylinder wall visible if you bend over and look at the side of the engine about midway on each cylinder. On my bike, oil is leaking from each of these - a lot of oil. Does anyone know why this hole exists and why oil is leaking, and most importantly - how do I stop the leaks?!!

Thanks,

I set valve clearances to the Honda Shop Manual specs, tensioned camchain and rebalanced carbs. While I was at it I changed the plugs from some ancient Champions to the stock Canadian NGK's.

The valve clatter is gone but there is now a buzz that starts at 4500-5000 and grows from there, except it diminishes a bit at 6000. Appears to come from the front of the engine - I took off anything that could rattle except the fairing itself and the fan, but nothing stopped it. It is much more evident while riding than in the garage, but its complete abscence below 4000 RPM appears to point to something rattling and not the engine.

Bar buzz which was only evident when I first had the bike with unbalanced carbs, and went away after balancing, is now quite vicious above 4000.... my only thought is that my carbs have wound up badly unbalanced somehow, despite a perfect reading on the gauge when I set them. Either that or something is going on with the fan that is shaking the whole front end around.

Also, when idling (~1200) occasionally the bike will misfire. Never did that on the Champions, should I go for hotter plugs?

My "new" 81 Gl500 only runs on 1 cylinder. Any suggestions where to start?

Bike sat for the last 2 years and I don't think they drained the carbs or stabilized the gas. Drained today and replaced with new. Replaced plugs with NGK's gapped to .028

Tank is clean, air filter is good. Air box is clean inside (no mouse nest of oil residue). Connections on coil wires input and output seem good. has spark.

When I got it the right plug was out, so I checkd compression and its good.
Bike does start easy but won't take a lot of throttle when running.

Can I use carb cleaner (tank or spray) on a GL? Befroe rebuiling them?
My CL350 has rubber diaphragms that turn to mush if you use carb cleaner. I learned the expensive way that's why I'm asking.

UPDATE!!! Turns out P.O had put worng plugs in bike. D8HA not D8EA so it was firing but wasnt in the chamber. Have found an oil leak from the front casting somewhere above the clutch cover. Any suggestions?
