hello all....

just picked up my slick 81 GL500 a few weeks ago for a mere $50. it was kept in a garage for a long time, so its not too rusty...just need some spit and pollish. planned mods are the dual disc brakes and hard saddlebags from an interstate. i already have a line on matching saddlebags and the hardware needed for the swap (rear blinker extenders, etc). i called around about the brake hardware, but salvage shops are sooo overinflated on prices.....80 bucks a caliper, 300 bucks for a few pieces....total rippoff. we are talking 25 year old used parts....might as well just go to honda at that price! oh well...they won't be getting my business!

This is my non-interstate GL500 1 week after I bought it this past August. I'm sure everyone can spot that the handle bars & marker lights aren't original. I'm thinking of finding some grab bars and seeing if I can add them back on, but it's hard to say with the current rear signal lights what all I'll need to do. The rear light I'm pondering changing out for something a little more smooth looking, though I'm also looking at some light grilles to dress up the stock light. I'm also thinking of blacking out the rad cover. I also do want to replace the downpipes as I don't like the corrosion thats on 'em, but haven't found any resonably priced replacements yet (the ones I found so far place make it an expensive proposition and would have to be imported from the UK). I did consider going to a two-into-one exhaust, but I really like the dual megaphone look. I'm keeping it on the option board, but for now I'll live with the corroded pipes. And the last thing I know I'm going to do is reupholster the seats as the vinyl on the rear seat is starting to split (I've got that).

Went through my stash of parts and came up with a block with a bad right bore, a crank that had spun a right rod bearing. Decided to put it together as a single. Even balanced the crank. Bike runs nice. Currently engine is in another bikes frame just for testing. Will be resurecting an old parts bike and putting this engine in it for a permanent transplant. I have no plans on installing a correct engine as I sold a bunch of parts off the parts bike and still have to spend hundreds of $$ to break even. The bike pictured is a 1981 Silverwing interstate with 6300 miles. Its engine is sitting on the work bench waiting for me to install a new cam (rusted at water pump). I have to take the engine completely apart. Mud wasps got into it and dirt is abrasive. Besides, I am the bikes original owner. Dick in Raleigh <><

This is my new first bike. It was delivered home by my boyfriend Michael this afternoon. I still have to learn how to ride, but now have a bike to learn on.
I had seen it on the way to work for a couple of weeks until I stopped and inquiried about it. It looked good to me but that is not the only thing you need to keep in mind. I made an appointment and we went to see it again. Michael thouroghly inspected and rode it. We left and said we would think about it. Three days later we brought it home. Im now the proud owner of a 1982 Silverwing Interstate GL 500 :)

I have so much more to learn about this specific bike. I am glad to have found this forum with so much information. Thank you.

I finally decided to post some pics...1982 GL500I with 14K miles (3000 more than when I bought it last summer). This is also my 1st bike; mid-life crisis thing I guess...

Bike was pretty bare when i got it, but in great shape. Had to buy new tires and windshield to make it road ready, and I've added lots of extras such as fork lights, driving lights, trunk rack, helmet lock, cup holder, throttle lock, headlight chrome, and COMPLETE type II radio system. Also chrome-painted the radiator grill and air inlet screens.

I finally got it registered, and can now ride legally. Bike has 37000miles on it and will go to a rally in early March. I've only seen two other GL500I's in Australia, so it's a rare object - so much so that insurance companies have never established a market value for one, and won't insure it.

Okay, I swear that the 'attach a file' link wasn't there the other day. :)

But I've attached my newly repainted gl650i. From this picture it may look like the tank is dented, but its just a bad reflection. Still waiting on the replacement windshield to arrive and then I have to balance the carbs and adjust the valves before I can really get her going again.

Can't wait!

If anyone has a large trunk they want to part with, just let me know too!

cheers!
