I reccently installed new fork seals. While the front end was apart I rebuilt the master cylinder, cleanen out the brake lines and serviced the calipers, the brake pads are in good shape so I'm reusing them. I reinstalled forks, front wheel and calipers. The the distance between the caliper (right) and disc is less than .028 in. Haynes Manual says push or pull fork leg untill the clearance is correct. Otherwise the brake will drag. Ive pushed the bejesus on the fork and nothing moved! what is the proper procedure?

It also has an aftermarket radio and speaker dash board that was on it when I bought it. Love the bike, great with 2 up. Currently having a problem but will post it in the correct forum.
Just purchased a 1981 GL500 Interstate. My first "street" bike was an 81 CX500 which as you guys know is very similar to the GL, so when I saw it for sale in a guys yard I bought it. I have always regretted selling my old CX and this fixed that problem. My wife and I are members of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club where I Currently serve as Road Captain. I primarily ride an 06 Yamaha Road Star especially when my wife is riding with me 2 up (she does'nt ride herself). Riding the SilverWing is like going back in time...lovin it.

My dream is a GL 650i in close to showroom condition as my budget will allow. Right now I'm still in the process of saving my fun money and educating myself on prices. Now that's an education !!

Been reading this forum for the last week or so absorbing all I could before inheriting my nephew's Silverwing. Read all the archives and a lot of the other posts in order to have a head start on my new project. Got it Saturday and since then have analyzed the rough idle cause as a bad spark plug on the right side. Checked the plug resistor by swapping them and it was good. Pulled all the fairing off and drained the oil. Pulled the oil pan off and cleaned the screen and sump area. Drained the radiator and cleaned the overflow tank. Am going to adjust the valves, check the timing chain tensioner and chain. With 47000 miles it sounds like the general consensus is to change both at this time so I will. Most everything looks in real good shape. I also got loads of spare parts: Spare front and rear wheel, spare rear gearcase, new rear brakes, four front calipers, one front brake master cylinder and rebuild kit, start/stop/horn electrical cluster, headlights/turn signal electrical cluster, spare odometer/tach cluster. Several cdi units, spare drive shaft. And a lot of other parts. Looking forward to using the knowledge base here to enjoy my new project. Will get a picture posted as soon as I get one to fit the size restriction.

Actually, I haven't had a bike for the last 20 years or so. I bought this one as a birthday present for myself. I was 80 last February.
Hello everyone. I purchased my 1981 Silverwing in May of this year and love it! I live in Simi Valley, California. I can't say enough how amazed I have been with its ability as a mid-range motorcycle, it's a great bike! I have, however, recently developed a problem. About two weeks ago my headlight relay went out and I have done everything short of dismantling the motorcycle trying to locate it. Does anyone know where it is supposed to be mounted? I have a Clymer manual and it has been more useful as a paperweight! Any information at this point would be helpful.

Just purchased a GL500i for $500. Put $350 into new tires lights and lube, and have it inspected, registered and riding it daily to work.

I love old Hondas, but I've mostly had early 80's VT700 and CB750 series bikes or bigger.

I've never had a bike with this small of an engine. I note that although it is labeled the "i"nterstate, it runs some pretty high RPMs at modern interstate speeds of 60-70. Do most people just keep it to 55 in the right lane? Any problems with speed of traffic issues? As a daily rider, I only spend about 3 minutes on the highway, so it's no big deal, but I like to travel and camp, and am worried about the lack of power during longer highway trips...

Just found this web site and joined. I have a GL650 with a Windjammer and Honda bags.
I’m in Rochester and if anyone wants to ride together when the weather gets a little warmer let me know.

For now, I need a little advice on valve clearance.

I’m getting a noise around 3500-4000 RPM that sounds like it might be the valves. Considering they have never been adjusted I thought it be a good place to start.

All four valves on the right cylinder have about 0.001” clearance. The left exhaust has about the same 0.001” but both of the left intakes are up around 0.006”. This seems odd to me.

I’m hoping there’s a seasoned mechanic out there that has an opinion. I’m wondering if the difference in clearance is telling me something, like there is excess wear and something else needs to be looked at.

I will adjust to the proper clearance but before I do I wanted to know if I should be looking at something else.

Thanks Rich

Hey All, I just bought my first Silverwing last night. I have owned several bikes over the years but wanted a lighter weight touring bike to commute back and forth to work. I bought a pretty clean 81 GL500. It needs a few odds and ends and sorted out a bit but I figure I have a couple of more weeks anyway before it is really warm enough to ride here in Ohio. If there is a place to post pics on here as soon as I get it cleaned up and ready for the road I will get some pics posted and if there are any other Silverwing riders in the area maybe we can make some road trips together when the weather gets a little warmer.

My bike looks good aith the bags on but I'm sure will look great when their mounted correctly

Hi,folks.Just registered as soon as I found this site. I own a ltd.edition GL700(1984) down here in New Zealand. As a despatch rider in London through the 80s I had a few cx500s and had good memories of them. Gotta say that the GL seems overweight and underbraked. Maybe I've been spoilt by my vfr800 or I'm just older but the memories of the old plastic maggot were of a much easier bike to live with.
Anyone else down this way with a similar bike?
